Donald Franklin Hess, 81, of Waller Road, Benton, died Thursday morning, June 28, 2018 at his home following a lengthy illness.
Born July 5, 1936 in Fishing Creek Township, he was a son of the late William Howard Hess, Sr., who died August 16, 1998 and Sylvia (Polk) Hess, who died February 21, 1996. Mr. Hess was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Melba K. (Cox) Hess, who died on July 8, 2014.
Mr. Hess attended the former Jonestown School and worked as a self employed carpenter. In his younger years, he was employed by the Magee Carpet Company of Bloomsburg.
An avid outdoorsman, his hobbies included fishing, hunting, boating and camping. One of his biggest joys in life though was spending time with his family.
Surviving are his two daughters: Sonda L. LeVan, of Bloomsburg and Barbara A. Crist, of Benton; five grandchildren: Jeremy Pepe and his wife, Gretchen, of Stillwater; Shaun Crist and his wife, Amy, of Danville; Larry Crist, Jr. of Benton; Tara Facchine and her husband, Patrick, of DuBois; Steven Hess, Jr. and his wife, Carrie, of Cape Coral, Florida; seven great grandchildren: Madison, Logan, Kailee, Gabriella, Ava, Kierston and Karleen; two brothers: Jim Hess, of Scranton and Tom Hess, of Schwenksville as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Steven D. Hess, Sr., on December 11, 2016; brothers: Carlton R. Hess on July 30, 2000; William Howard Hess, Jr. on September 17, 2009; twin sisters: Hilda M. Mulaney on June 30, 2014 and Helen F. Mulaney, on May 9, 2000.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 11 AM at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc.,4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (S. R. 487) with Pastor Scott L. Lyons, Stillwater Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Waller Cemetery, Jackson Township. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 10 AM until the service at 11 at McMichael's.
