James W. "Jim" Hartzel, 78, of Orangeville, died early Saturday morning, December 14th, 2019 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born March 27, 1941 in Bloomsburg, he was a son of the late Earl and Hazel (Hess) Hartzel. He and his wife, Martha J. (Booth) Hartzel, celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on October 15th.
Mr. Hartzel was a 1960 graduate of the former Scott High School. He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Marine Corps for 20 years, retiring in 1980 as a Master Sergeant. He served in Vietnam for two years. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, he worked as a mailman in Lansdale for several years.
He was a member of the Marine Corps League in Berwick; the Millville American Legion; a life member of the Orangeville Sportsmen's Club and was a life member of the Espy Fire Company.
An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, camping, bowling and playing cards.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Martha, are his two children: James W. Hartzel, Jr. and his wife, Charell, of Quakertown; Jan M. Strunk and her husband, Kevin, of Lehighton; three grandchildren: William, Benjamin and Jennifer; four great granddaughters: Nicole, McKenna, Madelyn and Kamryn; three brothers: Jack Hartzell and his wife, Nancy, of Bloomsburg; Charles Hartzell and his wife, Lucy, of Washingtonville and Marvin Hartzell, and his wife, Linda, of Millville and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside services with full Military Honors will be held Thursday, December 19th, 2019 at 2 PM at Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Marine Corps League of Berwick, 1713 Salem Street, Berwick, PA 18603 or to St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
