Joshua Chonko

Joshua  Chonko, 31, of rural Benton, Sugarloaf Township, died Thursday, March 9, 2017 at his home.

Born October 14, 1985,  he was a son of Wayne A. Chonko, Sr. and Mary Ann (Finney) Chonko, of Benton.

Joshua was a graduate of Benton High School and also attended Luzerne County Community College.  He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army (Infantry), as a Sergeant.  He did a tour of duty in Iraq and was awarded the following:  Army Commendation Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.  He also received the Certificate of Achievement from Dog Company 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne) for his outstanding performance. 

He had been employed by the Nomac Gas Drilling Company. 

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, skiing and snowboarding.

Surviving, in addition to his Parents, are his two brothers:  Wayne A. Chonko, Jr., of Lightstreet and Jeremy Chonko, of Benton.

Private graveside services at the Raven Creek Cemetery will be held at the convenience of the family with Military Honors.
