Ruth Dorothy "Dottie" (Broadt) Brooking, 89, died Sunday, May 12, 2019 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. She had been a resident of Bloomsburg for most of her life except for 20 years that she and her husband lived in Moreland Township, Lycoming County.
Born September 10, 1929 in Main Township, she was a daughter of the late Albert Curtis Broadt and Rachel Elizabeth (Probst) Broadt. She and her husband, Charles John Brooking, would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on October 30th.
Mrs. Brooking attended Mainville Schools and then the Scott Township School until 11th grade when she transferred to Bloomsburg High School.
She and her husband owned and operated the Sandwich Shops in Bloomsburg; one on Main Street and one on Market Street. She also assisted her husband at Henrie Printing in Bloomsburg and operated the T-Shirt Store as well. She retired in 1989.
Mrs. Brooking had been an active member of the First English Baptist Church of Bloomsburg and served on the Kitchen Committee. She was also a member of the American Red Cross, a charter member of the Benton Rodeo Association and the Bloomsburg Archery Club. From 1951 to 1960 she was a member of the Civil Air Patrol where she held the rank of Lieutenant.
She enjoyed being a homemaker and was known for her cooking and baking. She also enjoyed the outdoors and loved to hunt and fish.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, Charles, are her son, Charles John "Chuck" Brooking, II, of Annville, PA; a grandson, Jayden Brooking and his mother, Denise Brooking; two granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda Brooking and their mother, Christina Grendzinski, and a brother, Albert C. Broadt, Jr.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by the following siblings: Wilson James Broadt, Richard Harry Broadt, Melba C. Broadt, George Frederick Broadt and Helen Broadt, who was stillborn.
Services will be held Friday, May 17th, 2019 at 1 PM at the First English Baptist Church, Millville Road, Bloomsburg, with the Rev. Dr. Lee Barnhardt, her pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the First English Baptist Church, 700 Millville Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
