Abraham Monroe Obituary

Abraham Lincoln "Abe" Monroe, 79, of Huntington Township, died late Saturday evening, January 25th, 2020 at his home.

Born June 30, 1940 in Huntington Township, he was a son of the late Seymour W. and Myrle F. (Goodman) Monroe.  He and his wife, Janice E. (Chapin) Monroe, would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on March 23rd.

Abe was a 1958 graduate of Northwest Area High School.  He had been employed by the Wise Potato Chip Company of Berwick for 48 years where he was a wastewater treatment operator.  He retired in 2009.

He was an active member of the Town Hill United Methodist Church where he had served as a trustee and assisted with the maintenance and lawn mowing for the Church.  Years ago, he also assisted with the Fair Stand project.

Abe was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, wood working and mowing lawn for himself and others in the area.  He was the happiest when he was on his Wheel Horse mowing lawn.  He loved his family and grandchildren, nieces and nephews and always enjoyed family gatherings.

Abe was very patriotic and very proud of his family's military service.

He also served as the caretaker for the Dodson Cemetery Association for many years and mowed the cemetery lawn for 17 years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Janice, are his children:  Jack E. Monroe and his wife, Karen; Lisa M. Whitmire and her husband, Jeff, all of Shickshinny; three grandchildren:  Curtis Whitmire, Janet Stone, Jonathan  Whitmire; four great grandchildren:  Trista Whitmire, Teresa Stone, Terrah Stone, and Liam Whitmire and sister-in-laws:  Kathleen Monroe and Hilda Monroe.

Abe was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Carl William Monroe in 1979 and by the following siblings:  Vernon, Violet, Arthur, Ruth, Jack, William, Frank and a sibling that died in infancy.
