Cathy Beck Obituary

Cathy (Campbell) Beck, 71, of rural Benton (Sugarloaf Township) died Wednesday, February 7th, 2024 in Santa Cruz Providence, Argentina, while working for Frontiers International.

Born June 19, 1952 at the Bloomsburg Hospital, she was a daughter of the late Harry M. Campbell, who died December 10, 1997, and H. Lavenia (Deitrick) Campbell, who died July 2, 2012.

She was a 1970 graduate of Benton High School.

Cathy was devout & unwavering in her faith. She was a lifetime member of the Raven Creek Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School & was always involved with church activities. She knew where she was going when her time on this Earth was over. She was also an active member of the Raven Creek Ladies Guild and served as their secretary.

Cathy and her husband Barry, spent their lives working in the fly fishing industry. She & Barry traveled the world hosting trips through Frontiers International to some of the most beautiful and remote destinations such as New Zealand, Argentina, Africa, & Belize.

She was the first woman ever to appear on the cover of Fly Fisherman Magazine and has had photos published in almost every fishing publication imaginable. She was a world-class fly-casting instructor, the author of many books, and the designer of several popular fly patterns. She so graciously shared her passion and knowledge of the sport with so many people. Cathy and Barry were the perfect fly- fishing pair- it seemed there was nothing they couldn’t do and they always did it together. They were often referred to as “the first couple of fly fishing”.

Fly Fishing was not Cathy’s only love. When at home, she would likely be found in her flower gardens or walking along the stream. She had a deep love of nature and knew every wild flower that grew in Raven Creek. When asked her favorite stream to fish, she would always answer “My home stream, Fishing Creek”. Despite all the beautiful places Cathy visited, she loved her home & community most. In fact, traveling to other places gave her a unique perspective, creating a grateful posture of all of her blessings right here at home.

Cathy’s time with her grandchildren was also very special to her. She would often come home from a trip to head right to the soccer field to watch them play or simply have them over for dinner. She cherished watching them grow up and enjoyed being involved in their lives.

Cathy leaves an incredible legacy behind and this loss is being felt by so many who knew her personally or knew of her through her many accomplishments in the fly fishing industry. She will be remembered for her caring smile, patient demeanor, and overwhelming kindness.

Surviving are her devoted husband, Barry L Beck, who she married in 1981. Also surviving are children: Annie Beck Galanda and her husband, Greg, of Benton and their two children: Bridger and Colter; Wendy Blouin and her two children: Ethan and Henri, of Andover, Massachusetts; and a son, Ron Beck of Wilkes-Barre. Also surviving are her siblings; Jolene Stackhouse and her husband, Arnold, of Stillwater; Elaine Sweet, of Benton; Sheila Thompson, of Benton; Kay Stanton and her companion, David Hampton, of Benton and a number of nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Edward L. Campbell, Richard O. “Dick” Campbell and Alfred “Tom” Gulliver.

A private Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date at the Raven Creek Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Raven Creek Presbyterian Church, 993 Upper Raven Creek Road, Benton, PA 17814.
