Edward Vandegrift, 90, of Central (Sugarloaf Township), died Thursday morning, February 3, 2022 at his home.
Born June 20, 1931 in Chester, Delaware County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Margaret (Dolan)Vandegrift. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Emma A. "Dolly" (Wholahan) Vandegrift, on December 4, 2014.
He attended Chester schools and faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. For most of his working life, he was employed as a policeman in Upland, PA (Delaware County). In his younger years, he worked as a painter.
Mr. Vandegrift had been a resident of Sugarloaf Township for the past 38 years and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church of Central. Hewas also a member of the North Mountain Volunteer Fire Company and assisted with the monthly breakfasts and the annual carnivals. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Masonic Lodge.
He especially enjoyed his side by side and spending time with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his two children: Edward Joseph Vandegrift and his wife, Laurie, of Upland, PA; Carol A. Bernard and her husband, Walter, of Central; his four grandchildren: Walter, Jonathon, Brian, and Edward; his six great grandchildren: Walter, Breighanna, Brian, Raeann, Chase and Gavin and also a great great grandson, Walter.
Along with his parents and wife, he was the last member of his immediate family being preceded in death by a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Franklin and five brothers: Joseph, Norman, Robert, Harry and William.
Private Graveside Services will be held at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township. Pastor Todd Davis will officiate. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the North Mountain Fire Company, 991 Elk Grove Road, Benton, PA 17814.
