Edward L. "Ed" Walk, 79, of Benton, died Sunday, December 24, 2023, at the Wilkes-Barre Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Born June 2, 1944, in Packsville, West Virginia, he was a son of the late Rosetta Walk Graybeal. He and his wife, JoAnn (McHenry) Walk, celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on December 3rd.
Ed faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army in the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal; the Good Conduct Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 device; the Sharpshooter with Rifle Bar; and the Overseas Bar.
He was employed as a mason by C & D Waterproofing, Berwick, for many years.
In his earlier years, Ed was a Golden Gloves regional contender representing West Virginia.
Following his injury in Vietnam, Ed convalesced in an overseas convent where he learned how to crochet. Many a member of the Benton community and staff from the VA Community Living Center received his handmade blankets.
He was an avid sportsman, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed deep sea fishing in Costa Rica, fly fishing at Slate Run, salmon fishing at Pulaski, NY, and hunting trips to Branson, MO. A skilled craftsman, Ed's hand-tied flies were distributed by Slate Run specialty retailers.
He and his wife, JoAnn, were world travelers and enjoyed their many trips and cruises.
Ed was a member of the Benton V. F. W.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, JoAnn, are a step son, Lt. Col. Christopher T. Cleaver (retired) and his wife, Jane, of Mt. Gretna, PA; a step daughter, Heather Shivokevich, and her husband, Edward, of Northport, NY; two step grandchildren: Ashley Arasaki and her husband, Andrew, of Portland, Oregon, and Christopher T. Cleaver, II, of Savannah, Georgia.
Services and military honors will be held at a later date at the V. F. W., Benton, with burial in Sorber Cemetery, Reyburn.
