Ethel Hess Obituary

Ethel M. (Remphrey) Hess, 92, of Stony Brook Circle, Orangeville, died early Saturday morning, September 25th, 2021 at her home.

Born November 11, 1928 she was a daughter of the late George and Mattie (Taylor) Remphrey.  She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Ross H. Hess, on November 28, 2019.

She attended the one room school in Jonestown and later graduated from Benton High School.  Mrs. Hess had been employed by the Magee Carpet Company; the Baronol Sewing Factory, Dent’s Nursing Home and also worked as a home health aide for Columbia Montour Home Health.  She also baby-sat her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was an active member of the Lightstreet United Methodist Church and  various community and civic organizations where she served as treasurer for many years.

She loved to travel, read, do puzzles and visit with her friends, family and neighbors.  She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family and looked forward to family gatherings.  She was proud to have had a pen pal, who lived in New York, for 81 years.

Surviving are her daughter, Kathy E. Arner and her husband, James, of Millville; a daughter-in-law, Penny J. Hess; five grandchildren:  DerrickHess, Jeremy Arner, Justin Hess, Lori Parker and Grant Hess; seven great granddaughters: Alycia, Katy, Haylee, Madison, Mikayla, Abigael, and Violet as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  She also had 14 step siblings.  

Along with her husband Ross, and her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Gary R. Hess on October 31, 2019; four brothers:  Reuben, George, Harold and Sam Remphrey; and by two sisters:  Martha Kline and Esther Chapin.

Services will be held Monday, October 4, 2021 at 11 A. M. at the Lightstreet United Methodist Church.  Private burial for the family will be in the Jonestown Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Lightstreet United Methodist Church, 1640 Main Street, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.  The McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., of Benton, is honored to serve the Hess Family.  For online condolences or additional information, please visit our website:   www.mcmichaelfuneralhome.com
