Franklin G. Newhart, 87, of rural Benton (Sugarloaf Township), died early Tuesday morning, February 21, 2023 at Grandview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Danville.
Born, February 14, 1936 in Fishing Creek Township, he was a son of the late Frederick T. and Catherine A. (Kivler) Newhart. He and his wife, Sarah M. (Foust) Newhart, would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on April 20th.
Franklin attended the former Sugarloaf School and then Benton Schools. He was employed by TRW / Textron in Danville for 33 years until his retirement.
He faithfully served his country in the U. S. Army for two years and then in the U. S. Army Reserves for nine years.
Franklin was a long-time member of the former St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Sugarloaf Township. He was also a member of the St. Gabriel's Cemetery Board and was caretaker of the cemetery for many years.
He enjoyed videoing, family gatherings, nature, golf cart rides and traveling.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Sarah, are his four children: Frank Newhart and his wife, Patty; Timothy Newhart, Dean Newhart and his wife, Kelly; Nancy Hess and her husband, Bruce, all of Benton; his grandchildren: Joe, Kayla, Erin, Bradley, Kevin, Kristian and Kaitlyn; seven great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, the last of his immediate family, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Llewellyn W. "Lou" Newhart, Raymond L. Newhart, Frederick J. Newhart and Catherine A. Kline. Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Sarah Jane Newhart and a grandson, Kristopher Newhart, both in infancy, and by his adopted father, Hervey Long, who was the long time companion of his mother, Catherine.
Funeral Services will be held Friday evening, February 24th, 2023 at 6:30 PM at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton, with the Rev. Howard W. Leh, officiating. Private burial will be in St. Gabriel's Cemetery. A Viewing will be held Friday from 5 PM until the time of the service at 6:30 at McMichael's.
