Janice Leora (Souder) Shultz, 89, of Benton, died Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA.
Born November 19, 1936 in Bloomsburg, she was a daughter of the late Carl & Opal (Chamberlain) Souder.
Janice was a 1954 graduate of Bloomsburg High School and then graduated in 1958 from Bloomsburg State Teachers College. She taught elementary school at Berwick and Bloomsburg School Districts and later became a substitute teacher for Berwick and Benton. Janice was a member of the Benton United Methodist Church and in her later years attended the Benton United Presbyterian Church.
She enjoyed doing arts and crafts and was especially talented with her needlepoint embroidery. She was an avid reader and puzzler. She loved to watch all sports, but especially enjoyed watching Tennis, Phillies Baseball and Eagles Football. She was very community minded and generously gave time to the local food bank. Above all, her family was the center of her world, and she found her deepest happiness as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Janice is survived by her three children, Eugene (Debra) Shultz of Hawley, PA; Robert Shultz of Waterloo, NY; and Patricia (Chris) Bankes of Exton, PA; grandchildren, Alexandria (Richard) McCulloch, CJ Shultz, Zachary Shultz, Ariana (Gregory) Herrmann, Dani Shultz, Stephanie (Matthew) Lashner, and Rachael Bankes; great-grandchildren, Charles McCulloch, Mabel McCulloch, and Lincoln Bernard Herrmann; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Janice is preceded in death by her husband, Bernard E. Shultz, who died September 11, 2025 and a brother, Eugene Souder, who died in 1938.
Private graveside services will be held by the family at the Benton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Northern Columbia Community and Cultural Center, 42 Community Drive, P.O. Box 305, Benton, PA 17814.
