Jarod Coombs Obituary

Jarod George Coombs, 43, of Ridge Crest Dr, Bloomsburg passed away on September 4th, 2025 from the long term complications of a car accident in January 2003 which paralyzed him, and from his resulting addiction to prescription pain medications.

Jarod was born September 10th, 1981 in Town Hill and spent most of his life living with his parents in Huntington Twp and later, in Ross Twp near Sweet Valley, and in Shenandoah. He graduated from Greenwood Friends School in Millville and attended several local high schools, until earning his GED in 2000.  He enjoyed “anything with a motor” and loved riding various dirt bikes and four wheelers. In spite of his struggles, he saw the humor in everyday life and loved to laugh.  He worked as an equipment operator for several different companies until his accident in 2003.  After his accident, he became an ancient history buff and wrote a detailed analysis of the sarcophagus lid of the Mayan Emperor Lord Pakal.  His unrealized life mission became to tell young people his story in the hope that he could stop just one person from suffering as he did.

He is survived by his mother, Donna Coombs, Benton, and his father, Rodney Coombs, Ross Twp, his longtime caregivers, Sandy Gumpy and Jennifer Jennings, and aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends, all of whom he loved.  He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Donald & Dorothy MacDermott, his paternal grandparents, George & Evelyn Coombs, and his beloved aunt “Sis”, Cornelia MacDermott.

In December of 2022, a fund was established through The Community Giving Foundation with Jarod's cooperation and approval for the purpose of helping people suffering with substance abuse disorder and its life long stigma. Jarod wishes this fund to be his lasting legacy. Memorial contributions are welcome and may be made to The Community Giving Foundation, Jarod's Journey Fund, 725 West Front St, Berwick, PA 18603.  Fund distributions support the United in Recovery program in association with the Susquehanna Valley United Way.
