Jean L. (Hess) Derr

Jean L. (Hess) Derr, 90, of Bloomsburg and a native of Benton, died Tuesday, March 14th, 2023 at the Bloomsburg Care and Rehabilitation Center.   

Born August 19, 1932 in Bloomsburg, she was a daughter of the late Fred B. Hess, who died December 5, 1996 and Helen C. (Keller) Hess, who died October 28, 1998.  She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 49 years, Francis D. Derr, on February 16, 2001.

Jean was a 1950 graduate of Benton High School.  She had lived on Clearview Avenue in Bloomsburg from 1960 until 2019 and previously had lived in Fernville.

She was employed by J. C. Penney's in Bloomsburg; Weis Markets in Bloomsburg, and later for Giant Markets in Bloomsburg, for 14 years until her retirement in 1992.

Jean was a member of Bloomsburg Christian  Church. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and was an avid reader.

Surviving are her daughter, Francie Lue Sponenberg, of Bloomsburg; two grandsons:  Eric Sponenberg and Brett Sponenberg, of Bloomsburg; three great granddaughters:  Erica, Mandy Jo and Sutton Sponenberg and by a sister, Joanne E. Hess, of Bloomsburg. 

Along with  her parents and husband, she was preceded in death  by her son-in-law, Robert E. "Bob" Sponenberg on December 20, 2020.
