John Fredrik Dietrichson, 76, died unexpectedly at home on Tuesday afternoon, October 10, 2023, while performing work that gave him pleasure: landscape management. For more than forty years, John had worked at Berwick Weaving, serving as Plant Manager, a job he greatly enjoyed. After moving with his family to Greenwood Township in 1983, John found great satisfaction through physical labor: building stone walls, managing the woods, creating gardens and waterways, constructing decks, sheds, furniture and an addition to their house.
When not working with or on his 1941 Ford 9N tractor, John read voraciously, a passion since his high school years at Wyoming Valley Seminary. Later, while attending Bloomsburg College, he changed his major three times, extending his college experience and becoming what he called a “gradual student”. He enjoyed learning, discussing and arguing with both classmates and professors and added as much to his classes as he gained from them.
It was at Bloomsburg that John met Linda Hellerman. After a whirlwind courtship, they enjoyed 54 years as partners. When not working at their jobs, home or land, John and Linda loved to travel, especially to Europe. John had a passion for the city of Paris, which he deepened through extensive reading, studying maps and watching videos. He was the man to consult on what to see and where to eat in the city he loved.
John and Linda have a son, Juergen, a daughter-in law, Heather, and a granddaughter, Livia, for whom John is “Babbo”. Although their immediate family is small, they consider their extended family to include many close friends. John was a concerned citizen, auditor for Greenwood Township, volunteer water quality monitor for the ALLARM program, member of Fishing Creek Watershed Association, CARA, and Action Together NEPA, as well as a supporter of River Poets and local libraries.
If you wish to honor John’s memory, please consider a donation to the Bloomsburg Public Library, 225 Market Street, Bloomsburg, PA 17815, the Columbia County Traveling Library, 702 Sawmill Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815, or a library of your choice.
John requested no funeral services, but his family and friends will celebrate his life in the future. John has joined his parents, Frances and William Dietrichson and other family members and friends who have gone on before. We have been enriched by his life and love.
The McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., of Benton, is honored to serve the Dietrichson Family. For online condolences or for additional information, please visit our website: www.mcmichaelfuneralhome.com.
