June M. (Sterling) Hess, 82, of Benton, died early Saturday morning, August 22, 2020 at the home of her grandson, Brady Hess and his wife, Allison, and great granddaughters, Rhianna and Reagan Hess, in Benton.
Born June 18, 1938 in New Cumberland, she was a daughter of the late Alfred Raymond Sterling and Alma Octava (Bower) Sterling.
She attended schools in Berwick and later in Benton. June worked in the garment industry for many years, first at the former Dockey Shirt Factory in Benton and then later for Milco Industries. She later was employed by the Bloomsburg Hospital as a cook in the dietary department until her retirement in 2003. Following her retirement she had the pleasure of helping to raise her great granddaughters.
June was a member of the Benton United Methodist Church, the Benton Council of Churches and was a volunteer for the "Kids for Christ" program.
Her hobbies included sewing, crocheting, jig saw and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are her five children: James Merle Hess, Jr. and his wife, Brenda, of York, PA; Jill M. Houseweart and her husband, Barry "Duke", of Benton; Judy M. Parsons and her husband, Gary, of Bloomsburg; Joan M. Bogart and her husband, Bob, of Stillwater; John Martin Hess and his wife, Donna, of Millville; seven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and a great great grandson.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters: Joyce Nicholas, Shirley Lamoreaux, Susan Neff Billig, Betty Green and a sister that died in infancy. Also preceding her in death was her longtime companion, James D. "Jim" Kline.
A Visitation will be held Sunday, September 13th, 2020 from 12 Noon until 2 PM at the Benton United Methodist Church, Main Street, Benton. A private service will take place at 2 PM at the Church with burial in St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township. The McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., of Benton, is honored to serve the Hess Family.
