Kathryn S. "Kay" (Sweitzer) Chapman, 85, of Benton, died Friday evening, September 17th, 2021 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where she had been a patient for the past three weeks.
Born March 15, 1936 in Houston, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Arthur "Smoky" and Margaret (Long) Sweitzer. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Texas State University and later earned her Master's degree and pursued Doctoral studies. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 40 years, Charles M. "Chuck" Chapman, on January 29, 2013.
Kay had been employed by the Benton Area School District as the School Psychologist for many years prior to her retirement. Through her professional career in Colorado, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania she taught at the elementary, secondary and college levels and treasured helping students. She always valued the connections she made with students and staff.
Active in the community, she and her late husband, Chuck, were instrumental in the formation of the Northern Columbia Community and Cultural Center (N4Cs). She was also a member of the Red Hats, the Benton Senior Center and the Benton Sewing Club. She was a member of the Benton United Presbyterian Church where she served her church in numerous capacities. She was also a volunteer for the Benton Area Food Bank and was known as an advocate for environmental and political causes.
Surviving are her son, Edward C. "Ed" Chapman and his wife, Melissa, of Columbia, Maryland; her step children: Tom Chapman and his wife, Scotty, of Bethesda, Maryland; Connie Chapman, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Susan Chapman, of Berthoud, Colorado; two grandchildren, Patrick and Noelle and a brother, William "Bill" Sweitzer, of Houston, Texas.
