Mary E. (Shaller) Hartman, 99, formerly of Benton, died Tuesday, May 6, 2025. Lovingly known as "Aunt Mayme", "Amy" and "the pie lady", originally from Lofty, Schuylkill County, Mary spent most of her life in Benton, moving to Vintage Knolls in 2023.
Born June 6, 1925, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Emma (Yanoshik) Shaller. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Paul D. Hartman, on January 18, 1997.
Mary was a 1942 graduate of McAdoo High School. She worked from a young age on the Reading Railroad as a telegrapher and station agent under her Dad's guidance.
Later, she was the proprietor of the Quaint Shoppe in Benton and then worked at Flowers by Scott and the Flower Station, all of Benton, until her retirement.
"Did you eat?" was the greeting as you entered Mary's home. She enjoyed cooking and baking for family, friends and neighbors as much as everyone loved her delicious meals and apple cake.
Mary was a talent beyond compare in her crochet work. Many miles of yarn and countless hours went in to her sought after afghans and Christmas ornaments. Mary will be greatly missed by her friends and her niece, Renee, as well as her Vintage Knolls community. She is survived by nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband, Paul, and her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sons: Harry H. Hartman on December 20, 1975 and Daniel M. Hartman, on April 24, 2024. She was the last member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her sisters: Margaret Aungst on June 4, 2018; Martha Petri on June 8, 2018 as well as her brothers: John, Frank, Joseph and Michael "Butch" Shaller.
Per her wishes, there will be no public viewing or service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the charity of the donor's choice.
