Mary Ruth (Pennington) Holmes

Mary Ruth (Pennington) Holmes, 92, of Benton (Sugarloaf Township), died Thursday, October 23, 2025 at the Laurel Center in Hamburg, Berks County.

Born May 20, 1933 in Benton, she was the daughter of the late Alvin Ross Pennington and Mary L. (Wagner) Pennington.  She was preceded in death  by  her husband, John S. "Jack" Holmes on August 8, 2001.

Mrs. Holmes was a 1951 graduate of Benton High School and then attended Lycoming College.

She had been a long time, active member of the Benton United Methodist Church and was also a member of the Benton Sewing Club.

Mrs. Holmes served on the Sugarloaf Township Election Board for more than 30 years.  She was an animal lover and volunteered for the Animal Resource Center for many  years.  She had also served as a volunteer for the Benton Library.

Surviving are her four children:  Thomas "Tom" Holmes and his wife, Rosemary, of Norfolk, VA; Cathy Wolfe and her husband, Ron, of Bernville; Linda Ridall and her husband, Gary, of Shermans Dale; Heidi Tucker and her husband, Scott, of Sebastian, Florida; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; and a niece and nephew.

Along with her parents, and husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Holmes; a grandson, Kyle Lentini and a brother, A. Ross Pennington, Jr.

Services will be held Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 11 AM at the Benton United Methodist Church, 350 Main Street, Benton, with Pastor Chris Long, officiating.  Burial will be in the Benton Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Benton United Methodist Church, P O. Box 244, Benton, PA 17814 or to the Animal  Resource Center, P. O. Box 439, Bloomsburg,  PA 17815.
