Michael Roper Obituary

Michael W. Roper, 73, of Benton Township, died Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.

Born, April 7, 1952 in Augusta, Georgia, he was a son of the late Earl Halbert Roper and Julianne (Richardson) Roper.  He and his wife, Ann (Staniszewski) Roper would have celebrated their 14th wedding anniversary on November 1st.

Mike was a graduate of New Castle High School, in New Castle, PA.  He then entered the U. S. Navy, where he served during the Vietnam War from 1972 to 1978 on a nuclear submarine, the "USS Andrew Jackson". 

He was employed as an operations engineer and later the effluents manager at the PPL Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, near Berwick from 1978 to 2012,  when he retired.

He was a member of the Benton V. F. W. and the Shickshinny American Legion.

An avid sportsman, Mike loved to hunt and fish.  He also enjoyed sports and traveling; especially his trips to Maine.  In his younger years, he played golf and was a bowler.   

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Ann are his two children:   Lauren Magoon and her husband, Joel, of Dallas, PA; Daniel G. Roper, of Danville; three step sons:  Scott Simpson and his wife, Beth, of Kulpmont; Jonathan Simpson and his wife, Nadine, of Drums; and Adam Simpson, of Coal Township.  Also surviving are his four beloved granddaughters:  Eva, Lily, Daniella, and Lorelai; his siblings:  Steven "Mitch" Roper, of Volant, PA; Darlene Cromley and her husband, Blaine, of Seneca, SC; John Roper and his wife, Milissa, of New Castle; and Jeffrey Roper and his wife, Monika, of Willow Spring, NC as well as several nieces and nephews.

The Family will receive friends on Sunday, July 6th, 2025 from 4 to  6 PM at the McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, Benton (State Route 487).  (In keeping with Mike's wishes, please wear casual attire). Private Graveside Services will be held at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Sugarloaf Township. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1640, Hagerstown, MD  21741.
