Nicholas F. "Nick" Sabo, 77, of Sugarloaf Township, died Sunday evening, August 29, 2021 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Born March 6, 1944 in Chicago, he was a son of the late Thomas and Mary Ann (Antos) Sabo. He and his wife, Justa (Guadalupe) Sabo, celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on April 17th.
Nick attended High School in Chicago and earned his Associate Degree from St. Leo University in St. Augustine, Florida. He entered the U. S. Army where he faithfully served his country for 20 years. He had been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal with one oak cluster; the Overseas Service Bars with numeral 2; the Good Conduct Medal (6th award); the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral 3.
He had been in charge of maintenance for St. Columba Church in Bloomsburg for more than 20 years and had also assisted with maintenance at Christ the King Church in Benton.
An active member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Benton, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus; was the head usher and was instrumental in the Bloomsburg Fair Stand as well as serving in multiple capacities for the Church.
He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed golfing at Mill Race Golf Course and fishing.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Justa, are his four children: Michelle Kotas and her husband, Richard, of Georgia; Kimberly Besel and her husband, David, of Georgia; Kevin Sabo and his wife, Sarah, of Indiana and Jonathan Sabo and his wife, Gina, of Texas. Also surviving are his fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was the last member of his immediate family being preceded in death by two brothers: Thomas and Peter Sabo.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 4th, 2021 at 2 PM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 300 Mendenhall Lane, Benton, with Father Olusola Adewole, Father Richard Mowery and Father Timothy Marcoe, as Celebrants. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery, Fishing Creek Township will full Military Honors. Friends and Relatives will be received at the Church on Saturday from 1 PM until the time of the Funeral Mass at 2 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to Christ The King Catholic Church, P. O. Box 297, Benton, PA 17814.
