Robert E. "Super Bob" Sponenberg, age 71, of Bloomsburg, lost his courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, December 20, 2020, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born September 26, 1949 in Bloomsburg, he was a son of the late Wilbur and Helen (Fausey) Sponenberg. He and his wife, Francie (Derr) Sponenberg, would have celebrated their 50th anniversary on December 26th.
Bob was a graduate of Columbia-Montour Vo-Tech, class of 1970. He faithfully served his country during the Vietnam Conflict in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972. He has been employed at Laubach Auto Parts and retired from Jack Metzer Ford as a service technician. Bob was also a lifetime member, and former fire chief, at the Buckhorn Fire Company.
His hobbies included deer and turkey hunting and restoring early Ford Broncos and F-100s. He had easily owned thirty Shoebox Broncos in his lifetime and recently ordered a 2021 Ford Bronco to add to his collection. Bob had a love for racing. He enjoyed racing his tough truck, "Super Bob"- red cape and all, with his two sons and close friends.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, Francie, are his two children, Eric Sponenberg, Bloomsburg, and Brett Sponenberg and his wife, Tesa, of Bloomsburg, his faithful dog Blizzard and his three beloved granddaughters, Erica Sponenberg, Mandy Jo Sponenberg, and Sutton Sponenberg, who will miss their Pappy very much. Bob is also survived by his four sisters, Mary Lou wife of Bernie Musselman, Shirley Collins, Sandy Sponenberg, and Rose Ackerman, a brother-in-law, LeRoy Hess and many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wilbur Sponenberg Jr., and sister, Janet Hess.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family due to the coronavirus pandemic. Burial will be in the Elan Memorial Cemetery, Bloomsburg. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date when conditions are safe. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Buckhorn Fire Company, 19 Firehall Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
