Ronald Harvey Obituary

Our beloved, Ronald Glenn Harvey, passed away on April 28, 2023, and is now praising the Lord with those saints who have gone before him.

Ron was born on December 23, 1942, the son of Glenn Eugene Harvey and Dora Harvey Harter, in Broadway, Pa.  He was a true Harveyville boy full of mischief, wonder and adventure.  His mother’s favorite saying was, “I tried to raise him right!”  And she truly did.  Ron was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  To meet Ron was to know him – no pretense with a hearty laugh and zest for life.

A graduate of Northwest Area High School, Bloomsburg Teacher’s College (Bloomsburg University), Ron taught math in New Jersey for 7 years at Somerville High School.  He became involved in the teachers’ union and left teaching when he was invited to join the staff of New Jersey Education Association where he represented teachers and school employees for 31 years.  He negotiated contracts, provided workshops, argued grievances for members and even had one of his cases argued in front of the New Jersey Supreme Court.  Ron was loved and respected by his members as well as the staff of NJEA.

Ron was a member of Benton United Methodist Church and Patterson Grove Campmeeting Assn. where he held many positions from Trustee to Biblical characters for the many children’s programs he participated in.

He was also a social member of the American Legion, Jesse Thomas #495.  As a member of Lake Pinecrest Sportsmen Assn he held several positions on the Board of Directors.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, his Harley motorcycle as well as his CanAm motorcycle.  He especially enjoyed the yearly family reunion adventures with all of the family.

Ron was predeceased by his wife of 16 years, Charlene Trauth Harvey and in September 2000, Ron married Debbie Schoenhaar, blending a beautiful family of 5 children, Rebecca Gonyer (John) of Collegeville, Daniel Harvey (Nicole) of Berwick, Casey Poli of Palmetto, Fl, Annique Newton (Aaron) of Parrish, Fl, and David Lesage (Yarrow) of Royersford.  Ron and Deb were so proud of their 12 grandchildren, Zack Grouser, Corbin Grouser, Morgan Gonyer, Benjamin Potocki, Kamryn Gonyer, Aly Letukas, Eli Newton, Joceline Lesage, Olin Newton, Ryann Gonyer, Vivianna Newton, and Peyton Lesage.  Ron also leaves behind sisters Jeanette Harvey, Madelyn Meeker and Rachel Belles. He will be terribly missed by all of his family and friends.

A viewing will be held on Friday evening, May 12th from 5 pm to 8 pm at McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., 4394 Red Rock Road, (State Route 487), Benton, Pa.  Funeral Services will be held at Benton United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 13th at 10 am with interment at Bloomingdale Cemetery immediately following the Service.
