Susan Riley Rushmore, 69, of Mt. Pleasant Township, died Monday evening, January 25th, 2021 at her home.
Born March 9, 1951 in Plainfield, New Jersey, she was a daughter of the late William R. Rushmore, who died September 6, 2016 and Sara (Potter) Rushmore, who died July 29, 2016.
Susan was an English Major at Arcadia University in Glenside, PA; earned her M.Ed. at Rutgers University in New Brunswick; her LDT/C degree from Kean College in Union, New Jersey and also obtained her Pennsylvania certification as a reading teacher.
She was a life-long teacher of Reading and had been employed by the New Jersey Department of Corrections for most of her working career. From 2000 to 2012 she taught a self-contained reading class for Reading levels 0-5 and worked with the Laubach System and Reading Horizons. From 1981 to 2000 she taught GED Literature to students at the East Jersey State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey. From 1975 to 1979 she worked as a Language Re-education Teacher of Dyslexic high school students where she was also a houseparent.
Susan was a member of Morris Plains Presbyterian Church of Morris Plains, New Jersey and in her younger years was a member of the Rainbow Girls through the Masonic Order.
She served as a volunteer for the Susquehanna Valley Reading Partners and was a volunteer for Geisinger Hospice.
Surviving are her siblings: Thomas Hidlay Rushmore, PhD., and his wife, June, of Hatfield, PA; Patricia Ruth Rushmore, of Millville and Pamela Rushmore Nelson and her husband, Robert, of Morris Plains, NJ. Also surviving are two nieces and two nephews: Matthew Nelson, Sarah Nelson, Margaret Rushmore and David Rushmore as well as her canine companion, Buddy.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her special canine friend, Ivy.
Graveside Services will be held at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Orangeville at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory designated for Maria Hall and mailed to Geisinger Hospice, 74 Schoolhouse Road, Danville, PA 17821. The McMichael Funeral Home, Inc., of Benton, is honored to serve the Rushmore Family.
