Thomas Wenner Obituary

Thomas A. "Tom" Wenner, 77, of Benton, died Sunday evening, June 30, 2024 at Glen Brook Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center in Berwick.

Born November 1, 1946 at the Bloomsburg Hospital, he was a son of Jacob Edgar "Teg" Wenner, who died October 8, 2001 and Edna Ruth (Chapin) Wenner, who died February 24, 2012.  He and his wife, Judy R. (Houseweart) Wenner, would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on August 13th.

Tom attended a one room schoolhouse in Jonestown for first and second grade.  From there he went to the new Benton Elementary School where he began third grade.  He graduated from Benton Area High School in 1964.  Following his high school graduation, he earned his Associate's Degree in Accounting at Goldey-Beacom School of Business in Wilmington, Delaware.  He then went to Bloomsburg University where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Education with a major in Accounting.

Following his graduation from Bloomsburg, he began his teaching career at the Cameron County High School in Emporium where he taught for 14 years.  In 1984 he accepted a teaching position at the Benton Area High School where he taught until his retirement in 2004.  Tom served as the Varsity Basketball Coach for Benton for 5 years.  He also operated an accounting business out of his home for 20 years, retiring in 2022.  He also assisted his son, Jason, with his local lawn mowing business.

He was a talented baseball player and played under Tom Davies while attending Bloomsburg University.  He also played for the former North Branch League and the Bloomsburg Legion Team.  He had three major league baseball teams scouting him and  had tried out at Connie Mack Stadium in Philadelphia.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting.  He especially enjoyed fly fishing, tying his own flies and making trips to Seneca Lake in New York.  He trained German short hair bird dogs for many years.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, Judy, are his son, Jason T. Wenner and his wife, Jennifer K., a granddaughter, Macey L. Wenner, of Stillwater.
